Bowmanville community to appear on Oprah Sunday

Residents of Bowmanville will have their turn in the spotlight on Sunday as they appear in Million Dollar Neighbourhood on the Oprah Winfrey Network.

In the reality show, 100 families have only 10 weeks to raise their collective net worth by $1 million.

Crews first visited Bowmanville, about an hour’s drive east of Toronto, in early 2012. According to a news release for the show, the producers found a “distinct lack of infrastructure in developed land areas” in the community.

Many families were also affected by layoffs at the local General Motors plant.

Though Bowmanville is experiencing a housing boom, there are also serious concerns about future layoffs in the auto sector and surrounding businesses.

The show will be hosted by personal finance expert Preet Banerjee and psychologist Joti Samra.

In each episode, neighbours take on a community challenge and an individual challenge – it could include bartering, saving, downsizing or working together.

If Bowmanville is successful, the community will choose one family to win the life-changing sum of $100,000.

Last year, in the first season of Million Dollar Neighbourhood, the town of Aldergrove, B.C., was able to reach their $1-million goal.
