Jury selection to begin in Sgt. Ryan Russell death trial

TORONTO, Ont. – Jury selection begins, Monday, for the man accused of killing a Toronto police officer with a stolen snowplow in 2011.

Sgt. Ryan Russell was struck near Avenue Road and Davenport Road on Jan. 12, 2011.

Richard Kachkar, 46, is accused of stealing the plow from a driver who had stopped for coffee near Dundas and Parliament streets, then careening through downtown streets for more than two hours before hitting the officer.

Kachkar, who is from St. Catharines, has been charged with first-degree murder, which is automatic in the death of a police officer or prison guard.
