City working on plan to better synchronize traffic lights

TORONTO, Ont. – The city is working on a plan that they say will better synchronize traffic lights over the next five years.

The Toronto Star is reporting that the work in what they have deemed priority areas, like Leslie Street and Avenue Road, is nearly two-thirds complete.

Transportation Services will be upgrading the signal technology from telephone-line communication to wireless, as well as reviewing the co-ordination of signals on individual streets.

The hope is that synchronizing the traffic lights will ease gridlock and therefore cut down emissions in the city.

Transportation Services estimates the project will involve lights at 900 intersections and cost at least $3.6 million.
