TDSB proposes cutting hundreds of teaching jobs

The Toronto District School Board wants to cut hundreds of teaching jobs to deal with an nearly $55-million deficit in 2013-14.

On the chopping block are 248 high school teachers, eight vice principals, 47 guidance staff including librarians and 22 special education staff.

TDSB spokeswoman Shari Schwartz-Maltz told CityNews the board needs to find areas to make cuts, “get creative” and look at resources differently.

Staffing currently make up 66 per cent of the TDSB budget.

The cuts to vice principals would increase the number of single administrators in elementary schools to about 235 from 230.

However, due to the implementation of phase four of the full-day kindergarten program, elementary school positions would increase next fall.

The proposal asks for 62 extra elementary school teachers as well as 338 more early childhood educators.

These recommendations will be presented to TDSB trustees at a committee meeting on Thursday.

Trustees will vote on the proposal at a board meeting on March 6.
