Cost of streetcar barn soaring

The soaring cost of the new streetcar barn at Leslie and Lake Shore has TTC chair Karen Stintz and CEO Andy Byford on the defence.

Stintz said the hike from $344-million to $497-million can be blamed on a big sewer upgrade.

“It wasn’t until we started investigating the nature and the amount of the work that we understood that we needed to replace a trunk sewer on Leslie Street,” Stintz explained. “In consultation with the city, it’s been agreed that it get replaced. That’s where most of these costs are coming from.”

Byford doesn’t think sewer work should come out of his budget but said it’s all the same taxpayer and it’s better to get all of the work done at the same time.
