TORONTO, Ont. – Even when they win, it still seems like the underperforming Blue Jays lose in some way.
Despite managing to avoid the sweep by beating the San Diego Padres 7-4 in 11-innings, another pitcher had to leave with an injury, and this one was particularly emotional.
Ramon Ortiz, 40, threw a pitch in the third inning and immediately grimaced in pain before throwing his glove angrily to the ground.
Tears could be seen in his eyes and frustration was clear in his posture as the Blue Jays’ trainers attended to the injured veteran pitcher.
While it hasn’t been made official what the injury was, the reaction Ortiz had led most to speculate that it was something serious, and perhaps career-ending.
“It doesn’t look good, but you know, he’ll go to Florida, get examined and get his MRI,” Manager John Gibbons said.
At 40 a major injury such as a torn UCL, requiring Tommy John Surgery, would likely be career-ending for Ortiz, and that thought was likely behind some of the emotions visible on his face.
Ortiz is in his 13th major-league season, and his reputation is that of a guy who just loves to play.
Hopefully Sunday night wasn’t the last time we’ll see him doing that.
