School year starts early for some Durham students

Students at two Durham public schools are back in the classroom a month before most of their counterparts in the GTA.

As part of an ongoing pilot project, C.E. Broughton Public School in Whitby and Winchester Public School in Brooklin started a modified school year on Tuesday.

While the kids lose a month of vacation time in the summer, they still get the holidays spread out over the year.

“We love it,” said parent Jennifer Galt. “The kids get back to school before they get bored and they have breaks throughout the school year that they really need. So it’s great. They love it.”

A C.E. Broughton student named Kaiden agreed.

“I think it’s pretty cool because the regulars, even though they get to go back to school in September, we get breaks off [throughout the year],” he said.

The students also have all the same P.A. days and holidays as the rest of the schools in the Durham District School Board.
