The head of the Toronto Community Housing Corporation has abandoned plans to spend $2-million to renovate the public housing agency’s head office in Rosedale.
Gene Jones has scrapped the proposal, just a day after it was brought to the TCHC board meeting.
Toronto Mayor Rob Ford said it’s the right thing to do given the nearly $1-billion repair backlog for community housing units.
“It’s a smart move. That really bothered me when I heard that kind of money going into the Rosedale operation,” Ford said.
Jones defended the renovation plan on Thursday, saying then his office is so small he’s embarrassed to bring anyone in.
He has also given up on plans to lease space on Bay Street near College Street which would have cost between $600,000 and $800,000 a year.
