Arrest made in York University shooting

Toronto police have made an arrest after last week’s shooting at York University and when they took the suspect into custody, it led to the arrest of five other people.

Kemon Edwards, 22, is charged with careless use of a firearm, aggravated assault and numerous other charges. He is scheduled to appear in court on Saturday morning at Old City Hall.

The shooting occurred in the food court at the York University Student Centre around 10:45 p.m. on March 6.

A woman was shot in the leg and was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A second woman was hit with shrapnel and suffered non-life-threatening injuries. She has since been released from hospital.

Police said the women were innocent bystanders and were not targeted.

York University said it had taken several measures to “enhance safety” on campus in the aftermath of the shooting, which included increasing security patrols.

After Edwards was arrested on Thursday, a search warrant was executed near Steeles Avenue and Jane Street where police say they found heroin, cocaine, money and two guns.

Edwards is now facing drug charges as well as failing to comply with a prohibition order, police said.

During the Thursday raid, three men and two teens, all from Toronto, were also arrested for drug and firearm offences. The charges aren’t related to the York University shooting.

Dominic Bernard, 20, was charged with possessing heroin, cocaine and marijuana as well as numerous weapons charges.

Alex James, 23, and Jesse Dawson, 23, are facing similar charges.

A 17-year-old boy and a 16-year-old boy were charged with possessing heroin, cocaine and marijuana as well as numerous weapons charges.
