Gardiner closed this weekend for spring maintenance

Drivers will have to find another way to navigate in and out of the downtown core starting Friday night as the Gardiner Expressway is scheduled to be closed this weekend for annual spring maintenance.

The eastbound and westbound lanes will be closed from Carlaw Avenue to Highway 427 from 10 p.m. on Friday to noon on Sunday.

Crews will be cleaning catch basins, fixing pavement markings and guardrails, repairing potholes, conducting bridge inspections, installing four new overhead signs, and other tasks.

During the weekend closure, drivers can use Lake Shore Boulevard, the Queensway, Richmond Street, Adelaide Street, King Street and Queen Street as alternative routes.

“This is very important work that we need to do to keep our road infrastructure in a safe and operable condition,” Coun. Denzil Minnan-Wong, chair of the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee, said in a statement.

Starting April 28, the city will be conducting major construction projects on the Gardiner, which will result in lane closures. The project is scheduled to run until 2016. However, the lanes will re-open temporarily from July 10-26 for the 2015 Pan Am Games.

A series of overnight closures will take place on the eastbound lanes between the Humber River and Carlaw from Monday to Thursday. The lanes will be closed from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. on each night.

Transportation services GM Steve Buckley said the three Gardiner projects are:

  • Structural rehabilitation of three bridges on the Gardiner between the Humber River and Park Lawn Avenue. This work is expected to be completed spring 2016.
  • Centre median replacement between Ellis Avenue and Dufferin Street. The work involving new concrete barriers and drainage improvements is expected to be completed this summer.
  • West deck replacement of the Gardiner between the CNE and Grand Magazine Street. The work will be done in two phases. The first phase will begin April 26 and wrap up June 2015 with a pause for the Pan Am Games and the second phase will begin September 2015 and end June 2016.

GO Transit said the Gardiner closures starting on April 28 may delay buses by up to 30 minutes during peak hours on routes 16, 21 and 31. Click here for GO service updates.
