From the Internet ether rises “beezin,” a craze young people are apparently doing to get high.
According to recent U.S. reports, teens are rubbing Burt’s Bees lip balm on their eyelids to get a tingling sensation.
Some reports claim the sensation enhances an alcohol or drug high, while other accounts on social media suggest it’s used to stay alert.
It’s not clear when the practice began.
YouTube user Derek Lehmann posted a parody song about the trend to the video-sharing site in January 2013.
An Urban Dictionary entry posted in June 2010 says beezin’ causes a “freaky yet pleasurable tingling sensation” and is “usually applied when one is … high.”
Peppermint oil in the lip balm is responsible for the sensation, Dr. Brett Cauthen told Fox-25 in Oklahoma City.
But Dr. Cauthen warned that beezin’ could cause irritation and even infection, such as pink eye, if an infected person shares the lip balm.
