TIMELINE: Tim Hortons' half century of serving coffee, donuts & more

Tim Hortons celebrated its 50th anniversary this year and has endured many changes in its half century in business. The latest one was announced Sunday when the coffee and donut chain said it was in talks to join forces with Burger King.

1964 – First Tim Hortons restaurant opens in Hamilton, Ont.

1967 – Ron Joyce and Tim Horton become full business partners

1974 – In February, Tim Horton dies in tragic car crash

1975 – 1st Tim Horton Children’s Foundation camp opens in Parry Sound, Ont.

1984 – 1st U.S. restaurant opens in Tonawanda, N.Y.

1991 – 500th Canadian restaurant opens in Aylmer, Que.

1995 – Tim Hortons is purchased by Wendy’s International Inc.

1995 – 1,000th Canadian restaurant opens in Ancaster, Ont.

1997 – 1,500th restaurant in the chain opens in Pickerington, Ohio

1998 – 100th U.S. restaurant opens in Columbus, Ohio

2000 – 2,000th restaurant in the chain opens in Toronto

2001 – 1st U.S. Tim Horton Children’s Foundation camp, Camp Kentahten, opens in Campbellsville, Ky.

2004 – Tim Hortons celebrate its 40th anniversary

March 2006 – Tim Hortons completes an initial public offering and is fully spun off as a separate company as of September 29, 2006. Tim Hortons trades on the NYSE and TSX under the symbol THI.

December 2006 – 3,000th restaurant in the chain opens in Orchard Park, N.Y.

2008 – 500th U.S. restaurant opens in Detroit, Mich.

2009 – Tim Hortons and Kahala Corp. – parent company of Cold Stone Creamery – announces the co-branding of up to 100 combined restaurants in the U.S.

2009 – Tim Hortons Inc. announced on Sept. 28, that it has completed the reorganization of its corporate structure to become a Canadian public company.
2011 – Tim Hortons signs a Master Licence Agreement (MLA) with Apparel Group based in Dubai for up to 120 multi-format restaurants in markets in the Gulf Co-operation Council.

2011 – In December, Tim Hortons opened its 4,000th restaurant.

2012 – Opens first store in Oman

2013 – Opens first store in Saudi Arabia

2014 – Tim Hortons CEO says company will no longer be selling Cold Stone Creamery products in its Canadian restaurants

2014- Company marks 50th anniversary at Toronto’s Yonge-Dundas Square, creating a replica of the first 1964 store and announcing that it is bringing back the éclair to shelves after a public-vote campaign
