PM Stephen Harper expected to kick off election campaign period Sunday morning

Prime Minister Stephen Harper is expected to ask Governor General David Johnston to dissolve parliament Sunday morning, kicking off the federal election campaign.
The office of the Prime Minister has revealed that Harper and his wife, Laureen, will meet Johnston at the governor general’s residence at 9:55 a.m. Sunday morning.
Harper is then scheduled to deliver remarks to the media at 10:15 a.m.
News broke Wednesday that Harper could dissolve parliament over the August long weekend. If he does, the 2015 election campaign will be the longest since 1872.
According to election laws, the federal election must take place Oct. 19. But Canadians have been waiting for Harper to “drop the writ” and begin the campaign. The minimum campaign period is 37 days.
Political observers have said a long campaign would benefit Harper, whose Conservatives have greater financial resources than the other parties.
