Speed a possible factor after car crashes into backyard fences

By News staff

Toronto police are investigating after a car plowed into two backyard fences in the city’s east end early Sunday morning, sending debris flying into neighbours’ homes and onto the sidewalk.

The single-vehicle crash happened around 2 a.m. on Victoria Park Avenue, near Finch and Van Horne avenues.

The vehicle was heading south on Victoria Park when it lost control and crashed into two neighbours’ fences.

The force of the crash completely destroyed the structure, blowing it to smithereens.

“When I came outside from the back, I saw a gaping hole where my shed is and my part of my fence was gone,” said one of the homeowners who goes by “Joe.”

“I proceeded to go into the back and [saw] the damage, and wow, pretty spectacular.”

Pieces of the car, including a tire and the bumper, also scattered the area.

Along with the driver, Joe said police told him four other people were also in the vehicle. Luckily, no injuries were reported.

He said the woman who was driving got out of the vehicle and spoke to him, apologizing for the damage. She told him they were heading home from a party and were apparently being followed when they rammed into the fence.

In an earlier tweet, police said they were investigating a “possible street racing aftermath.” However, investigators have not confirmed if street racing played a role in the collision. Joe said drivers tend to speed on this stretch of road.

There is no word on charges.
