Toronto police have released security video of a suspect wanted in connection with a homicide at a Rexdale apartment.
Emergency crews were called to the scene around 5 a.m. on Jan. 30 after friends went to visit Sylvia Consuelo at her apartment on Kendleton Drive, and found her dead.
Security video released by police on Friday shows a suspect entering the victim’s apartment building around 1:30 a.m. on the day of her death, walking to the elevator and then exiting the building by the stairwell about an hour later.
Det. Sgt. Hank Idsinga with the Toronto police Homicide Division said that during that hour, the suspect brutally sexually assaulted Consuelo, beat her and then suffocated her to death.
Idsinga said the 34-year-old victim lived by herself and suffered mental health issues.
“Sylvia was a person who struggled with mental health and narcotic addiction issues. She supported her addictions through prostitution” Idsinga explained. “In short, Sylvia was an extremely vulnerable resident of our city.”
The victim was also a mother to three young children who were no longer in her care.
Police have also released images of the suspect as well as clothing similar to what he was wearing on the night of Consuelo’s death.
Investigators are canvassing a large part of Etobicoke to gather information.
“Somebody will know this suspect by his clothing or his mannerisms,” Idsinga said.
