Mississauga could become one of the first cities in Ontario to legalize ride-sharing services such as Uber.
City councilors are set to debate a staff report next week which contains an “equal regulation” plan to legalize Uber-X, but still allow taxis to compete as a service.
Like taxis, Uber-X would have to go through background checks, vehicle inspections and prove that they have insurance. But unlike taxis, Uber-X would be allowed to have as many vehicles on the road as it wants.
Taxi companies and limo services would be allowed greater freedom to set their own rates.
Brampton recently called on Uber to suspend operations while it considers new regulations while the City of Toronto is expected to unveil its proposed regulations in April.
