Trending: Raccoons increasingly using public transit

By News Staff

There was a time when raccoons and public transit just didn’t mix. They pretty much stuck to sneaking into garbage bins while we slept, content to coexist from a safe, respectful distance. But the masked bandits are increasingly encroaching into commuter territory.

The latest sighting took place at St. Clair West subway station, which isn’t a big surprise considering its close proximity to the Nordheimer Ravine.

A photo was posted to Imgur.com, sparking a discussion on Reddit.

“Those downtown garbage bins wont get looted themselves,” Alexefi wrote. “And it’s expensive to live downtown, so he commutes.”

But not everyone thinks the presence of the usually-nocturnal creatures is a laughing matter.

“I don’t want to be a downer but he probably has distemper,” CrazyBunnyLady added. “Some of the symptoms are losing their fear of humans and coming out during the day.”

It was just last month that a raccoon briefly hopped onto a subway train at Spadina Station, causing a brief delay.

“From time to time, wildlife and other animals do make their way onto our property,” said TTC spokesperson Brad Ross.

In December a raccoon was also spotted on an Aldershot GO Train.

It was safely removed and released.
