East-end cafe has tenancy terminated after fatal drive-by, other violent incidents

By News Staff

An east-end cafe that has been the scene of several violent incidents, including a fatal drive-by shooting early Sunday morning, has had its tenancy terminated.

A termination notice (below) was posted in front of the Cloud Nine Cafe on Danforth near Coxwell Avenue on Monday.

Twenty-year-old Abdullah Farah of Toronto was found lying on the sidewalk outside the cafe around 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed to hospital where he died.

Police are looking for suspects in the case.

Det. Leslie Dunkley said he believes it was a targeted shooting.

Police are searching for a white, four-door sedan which was last seen driving east on Danforth Avenue. Anyone with information is being asked to contact police.

More than a dozen residents and two city councilors gathered on Danforth Avenue Sunday afternoon to voice their concerns. They say they’re tired of the violence that appears to be connected with this cafe and they want the city to take action.

In 2013, Markham firefighter Dominic Parker, 45, was fatally stabbed at the location, then operating under the name Rotana Café.

Abdiweli Mohamed Yusuf was fatally gunned down inside the cafe in 2015.

“Why do we have nine police cruisers sitting here for one person – where were the nine police cruisers through the course of the night,” was a question asked by one angry resident to councilors Mary Fragedakis and Paula Fletcher.

“We can’t go out in the evening without being worried about being hit by a random bullet,” said area resident Michael Rusek. “This location last year was the sight of another shooting. …There were all kinds of promises about what was going to be done. As far as we’re concerned not a lot came out of it.”
