Another vacant lot will soon be the site of affordable housing, Mayor John Tory said Tuesday.
He and Coun. Ana Bailo were speaking at 640 Lansdowne Ave., one of five sites earmarked for affordable housing last year.
The lot, north of Bloor Street, was once a TTC garage. It was declared surplus in 1997, nearly 20 years ago.
“Here we stand, almost in 2017, and it sits, looking as it looks, no thing of beauty. Moreso than whether it looks beautiful or not, it sits underutilized, in fact unused,” Tory said of the lot.
Tory says that he has made housing a priority for the municipal government, and is asking the provincial and federal governments to do the same – and commit money to the project.
“That is why, this Friday, we will host the Toronto Housing Summit … which will be attended by members of the provincial and federal governments, as well as activists and experts,” Tory said.
“The goal is to urge all levels of government to take a greater role in addressing the crisis in affordable housing and social housing facing Toronto, and other Canadian cities.”
Bailao said “housing is one of the biggest challenges we face as a city.”
Currently in Toronto, there are 97,000 households on the housing wait list.
