Toronto District School Board trustees voted to keep their Vaughan Road Academy property, after it was decided that it would no longer be used as a high school.
The decision to keep the property, and to develop policy around future core holdings, was made at Wednesday night’s meeting.
“I know that the community has done a tremendous amount of work over the past few months envisioning something amazing for this site,” area trustee Jennifer Arp told CityNews. Arp represents Ward 8 Eglinton-Lawrence.
“It’s hoped that the work the community has done will influence our policy [on all TDSB] core holdings.”
The school is something of a fixture in Toronto: Drake went there, as did Neve Campbell, Ellen Page and Allison Pill. It’s also home to community programs, including a daycare and city-run recreation programs.
“There’s a great need for space for community agencies and people to use this space on a regular basis,” Arp said.
The school is located, as the name suggests, on Vaughan Road, near Oakwood and Eglinton Avenues. The decision to close the school was based on declining enrolment. However, supporters of the site have argued that the neighbourhood is growing, and will continue to grow once the Eglinton Crosstown is completed.
“There is also a compelling case that we will need Vaughan Road [as a school] once again in the future … that is the driving factor for keeping it as a core holding,” Arp said.
