4-foot python discovered in Cherry Beach

A group of men discovered a four-foot-long snake slithering on the rocks at the Cherry Beach Sports Fields, during a game of soccer on Wednesday.

Ian Harvey and his friends made the discovery and posted video online.

“It could’ve been there the entire game, and we were there for about two hours,” he said. “It could’ve been there the whole time and we never noticed it.”

Harvey said the friends went online and discovered the snake was a non-venomous python. He also said a man in the area told him there was an even bigger one found in the same area a couple of weeks earlier.

“The fact is there may be other snakes out there,” said Harvey. “Why are these snakes here in the first place?”

Harvey said the men reported the snake to the city, including Animal Services, Parks, Forestry and Recreation and 311. Animal Services said they were called to Cherry Beach twice in August, but there was no trace of snakes.

An Animal Services spokesperson said ball pythons are not prohibited unless they reach an adult length longer than three metres.

There were reports the snake found on Wednesday was placed in a bag and removed, but that hasn’t been confirmed.

Parks, Forestry and Recreation and Animal Services have not yet provided an update.
