Passengers aboard an Ontario Northland bus are being credited with saving a potentially serious situation on Thursday after the driver suffered medical distress on Highway 401.

The bus was carrying 47 passengers from Sudbury, Ont., to Toronto, when the problem occurred.

Officials with the bus company said a passenger took control of the vehicle and managed to pull it over to safety on the shoulder of the highway.

Once in a safe position, emergency services responded and another driver was dispatch to take the passengers to their destination, Ontario Northland spokesperson Rebecca McGlynn said in a statement.

No other injuries were reported.

“The driver is currently under medical care. Ontario Northland wants to thank its passengers for their assistance with this incident,” McGlynn said.
