Roy Finch won’t report to Stampeder training camp after arrest in U.S.

CALGARY – Calgary Stampeders running back and kick returner Roy Finch will not report to training camp later this month.

The CFL’s outstanding special teams player in 2017 was arrested April 15 in Edmond, Okla., for assault on a police officer, possession of marijuana and other charges.

“I am focusing on my mental, physical and spiritual health along with accepting my role in the current legal proceedings,” Finch said Wednesday in a statement from the Stampeders.

“I am grateful for the support of family and friends and look forward to returning to my Calgary family in July if granted the opportunity.”

Finch, 26, signed a contract extension with Calgary in February prior to the start of CFL free agency, but the Stampeders have now placed Finch on the retired list.

“Roy has entered a program in Oklahoma to help him deal with personal matters and any pending legal processes will begin after that time,” Stampeders general manager John Hufnagel said in the statement.

“We continue to wish Roy the best and hope to be able to provide more information in July.”

The five-foot-seven, 165-pound back from Niceville, Fla., played 13 games for Calgary in 2017, registering career highs in rushing yards (114), receiving yards (133) and punt return yards (1,200).

Finch added 696 kickoff return yards and returned three punts for TDs.

He served a two-game suspension last season for violating the CFL’s drug policy.

Finch said he took Adderall to treat attention deficit disorder and failed to clear the medication with Stampeder doctors.

CFL rookie camps open May 16 followed by main camps May 20.
