Firefighter treated for smoke inhalation during fire

A Toronto firefighter is recovering after being treated for smoke inhalation during a four-alarm apartment fire in East York early this morning.

Officials said they were called just after 3:30 a.m. about the blaze on Thorncliffe Park Drive near the Don Valley Parkway and Don Mills Road.

The fire started in a unit on the sixth floor of the building while six people were inside, said Platoon Chief Kevin Shaw.

The people escaped, but because their door didn’t close behind them, the fire and smoke spread to the hallway.

“With the door left open, it pretty much fueled the fire until our firefighters got there and were able to extinguish it,” he said.

Even with a mask, one of the firefighters got into trouble when he encountered the heavy smoke.

He issued a mayday call and was found to have had minor smoke inhalation.

He was taken to Sunnybrook hospital as a precaution.

Paramedics originally said the firefighter had serious injuries.

Shaw said investigators haven’t determined the cause of the fire, but will be returning to the building on Thursday.
