A driver is in custody following a high-risk traffic stop that closed a portion of the QEW near Burlington briefly on Wednesday morning.
Ontario Provincial Police responded to several calls around 10 a.m. after a vehicle was spotted with the word “kill” spray-painted in white on the back window of a minivan near Appleby Line. Witnesses also reported the driver was wearing a ski mask.
Sgt. Kerry Schmidt says officers from the Burlington OPP descended on the location and managed to get the driver to stop without incident.
Schmidt says even though the driver was not driving recklessly and no weapons were found in the vehicle, the incident was still very concerning for police.
“This is very scary to see that kind of behaviour, that kind of image,” said Schmidt. “You don’t know what it means, how to rationalize it and what could potentially come out of it. It’s something very concerning for us and that’s why we certainly took that as high priority.”
Police say no charges have been laid but the man is undergoing a mental health evaluation.
