Alaska budget cuts could close transitional housing program

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Administrators of a transitional housing program in Anchorage say Gov. Mike Dunleavy’s proposed budget cuts could cause the program to shut down.
Rural Alaska Community Action Program administrators tell Alaska Public Media that the Safe Harbor program could close down by the summer if they lose state funding.
The program that provides housing for families with children gets about half its funding from the state.
Safe Harbor supervisor Claudia Maria-Mateo says closing down the facility would put out about 140 people.
The Republic governor has proposed cutting state grant funding to 14 safety net organizations.
Dunleavy has called for the sweeping cuts to address an ongoing deficit estimated at $1.6 billion. He has also proposed full Alaska Permanent Fund dividends for residents.
