Police are urging witnesses to come forward after a 24-year-old woman was struck and killed by a stray bullet earlier this month.
Jackline Keji Gore, 24, was killed after she spent the night out with friends at Fume Lounge and Bar in Mississauga near Torbram and Drew roads early on July 8.
Police say she was talking with friends in the parking lot when the suspect approached a group of men nearby. He pulled out a handgun and began shooting at one of the men.
The intended target fled the scene through the parking lot as the suspect continued to shoot. Jackline was hit by a stray bullet and killed.
The suspect involved is described as a male wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt and a mask. He was last seen fleeing the scene in a black SUV.
Insp. Martin Ottaway is appealing to the people who were at Fume that night.
“We know there were a number of people present in the parking lot when the shooting occurred and we need those people to do the right thing and speak with us.”
Ottaway says they know who the intended target was that night and have spoken with him, but he could not reveal any details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
“I think we should all be outraged about what happened that night … it’s that outrage and community pressure that I want to be put on the people who have information in regards to this homicide, do the right thing and contact us,” said Ottaway.
“Jackline was doing nothing more that night other than enjoying a night out with friends when her life was tragically taken away. She was an innocent victim in what can only be described as a senseless act of violence and disregard for human life,” said Ottaway
A spokesman for the family say she was an innocent victim and that these acts of violence continue to plague their community.
“On the morning of July 8, Jacqueline’s family experienced their worst nightmare,” said James Swaka “There is continued disbelief, confusion, shock as to how and why this could have happened to Jacqueline.”
Shortly after the press conference, Jackline’s family and friends gathered Friday outside Fume Bar and Lounge for an impromptu memorial.
