New Music Friday: Top picks for October 4th

By Lindsay Dunn

Fridays are always a great day for music lovers as not only does it mark the last workday for many in the week but it’s also the day where most artists release new music. Here is a look at some of the releases out the week of October 4th.

Jessie Reyez gets political

The Canadian singer who was recently featured on Beyoncé’s soundtrack album The Lion King: The Gift, just released a politically charged song Far Away.

The song talks about the pain of losing someone to deportation. In the music video, it shows her partner being taken away by U.S. ICE officers (Immigration and Customs Enforcement).

“Attachment to someone is both something beautiful and something painful. Imagine finally finding your home in another human being but they’re stuck on the other side of this rock we’re all on,” said Reyez in a statement. “The sad part is that we will inevitably be ripped apart — whether we are separated by borders or, due to the nature of our corporal disposition to death, we’re eventually forced apart when we die.”

“Considering that death is inherent to human frailty, wouldn’t it be nice if ‘goodbyes’ weren’t forced upon us while we still have the gift of life and love? Especially by invisible lines deemed ‘borders’?”

Bieber gets married and goes country

Justin Bieber is having a big week, he got married (again) to Hailey Bieber and released his highly anticipated single “10,000 Hours” with multiple CMA award-nominated country group Dan + Shay.

The Headstones develop their PEOPLESKILLS.

Canada’s ultimate take-no-prisoners rockers the Headstones, are back with a new single “Leave It All Behind,” off their upcoming album PEOPLESKILLS.

PEOPLESKILLS is an obsessive dissection of lyric and melody. It’s an intensely honest record that showcases our evolution as songwriters, musicians and friends.” the band said in a statement.

BONUS TRACK:

Maren Morris is the most nominated artist at the upcoming Country Music Awards and is the first female country artist to have a number one album in more than two years with her album Girl. On Friday Maren released a new version of her hit song “The Bones” with Hozier. When they get to the chorus together… It’s like butter!
