Halton police receive prank call claiming murder in Milton

By Lucas Spadafora

False claims of a murder in Milton sent police into a frenzy Tuesday.

Halton police received a call just before 11 a.m. from a man stating he had shot and killed someone at an address near Maple Avenue and Thompson Road North.

As a result, Chris Hadfield Public School and St. Peter Catholic Elementary School were placed in precautionary hold and secure due to their proximity to the alleged incident.

Tactical police resources and K9 units were involved and investigators determined the call to be unsubstantiated.

Police say they believe the incident was swatting, a criminal offence in which a caller makes a fake report with the purpose of having numerous police and emergency resources dispatched to an fake critical incident.

Police are still trying to identify the party responsible for the call.
