Lifeguards return to Toronto beaches this weekend

Lifeguards will be on duty at 10 Toronto beaches beginning this Saturday, just in time for a heat wave.
The city’s supervised beach program will have lifeguards at designated swim areas, seven days a week from 10:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Torontonians are encouraged to not swim in undesignated areas.
It will be a muggy and hot weekend with temperatures are expected to hit 31 degrees on Saturday with a humidex of 35 and 33 degrees on Sunday with a humidex of 37.
Residents are asked to still follow provincial guidelines as it pertains to outdoor gatherings if attending a beach this weekend.
City designated swimming beaches include:
• Bluffer’s Park Beach (Blue Flag)
• Centre Island Beach (Blue Flag)
• Cherry/Clarke Beach (Blue Flag)
• Gibraltar Point Beach (Blue Flag)
• Hanlan’s Point Beach (Blue Flag)
• Kew-Balmy Beach (Blue Flag)
• Marie Curtis Park East Beach
• Sunnyside Beach
• Ward’s Island Beach (Blue Flag)
• Woodbine Beach (Blue Flag)
The Blue Flag indicates the beach is certified under the Blue Flag program which means they meet a high standard of water quality, environmental management and safety.
Mayor John Tory is also encouraging all residents to make sure to clean up their garbage after a trip to the beach.
“Please do your part by properly disposing of your own waste. I can’t imagine going to somebody else’s backyard and just throwing things down so why would you go to our collective backyard … and throw things down on the ground or just leave them there when you are finished,” said Tory.
The city has not indicated when outdoor pools will be open at this point. Splash pads are allowed to be open under the current provincial guidelines.
