First discovered in India, the Delta variant has wreaked havoc in that country and is currently sweeping through the U.K.

A new report from Public Health England shows concerning trends, including higher transmissibility and higher cases among kids who go to school.

Premier Doug Ford also used the spread of this variant of concern as a reason not to reopen schools to in-person learning before September.

Infectious diseases expert Dr. Isaac Bogoch says the variant is being transmitted primarily among unvaccinated individuals and early data from the U.K. shows the vaccines are effective against it, but two doses are imperative.

“The early data from the U.K. demonstrates that a single dose can provide about 30 per cent effective protection … but that number might change with time. It’s not good enough, but it’s still something and a second dose would be better,” he said.
