The search continues for a missing boater in Lake Ontario in Halton Region.

Halton Regional Police’s marine unit and the Canadian Coast Guard said an unoccupied boat was found shortly after 6 p.m. Thursday, where 16 Mile Creek meets Lake Ontario in Halton — a well-known, popular excursion route for many including kayakers.

It is not clear at this time what kind of vessel was located.

Police identified the boat operator as 80-year-old Robert Wyles.

Police said the vessel was purchased earlier in the day by Wyles, who is an experienced operator, and was seen leaving Bronte Harbor just after noon.

Police are asking residents in the area to check shorelines between Burloak Drive and Trafalgar Road to assist with the active search and rescue mission.

A joint effort between several crews — including Halton, Peel and Hamilton police marine units — took place overnight with flares.
