Ontario reports more than 400 COVID-19 cases, 7-day average climbs

Ontario is reporting 441 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday as infections in the province continue to rise.
The seven-day average of daily infections now sits at 492 cases. The average is up 121 cases from one week ago.
The province is also reporting three additional deaths related to COVID-19.
Of the new cases, 268 are in individuals who are not fully vaccinated or have an unknown vaccination status and 173 are in fully vaccinated individuals.
There were 19,368 tests completed in the last 24-hour period and the province is reporting a test positivity rate of 3.1 per cent. It is the highest test positivity in nearly two months.
There are 244 people hospitalized with COVID-19, 175 are not fully vaccinated or have an unknown vaccination status and 69 are fully vaccinated.
Another 13,049 vaccine doses were administered over the last 24 hours, 88.5 per cent of eligible Ontarians have now received one dose and 85.1 per cent are fully vaccinated.
The scientific director of Ontario’s COVID-19 Science Advisory Table says the rising cases in Ontario can be attributed to cooling temperatures, less stringent capacity limits and relaxed precautions among the public.
Dr. Peter Juni says reintroducing capacity limits may help the situation, and added that individuals have the power to help steady the course through behavioural changes like avoiding crowds, wearing masks indoors and working from home if possible.
Public health officials in Sudbury announced Monday they would be reintroducing capacity limits, require masking at organized public events and require proof of vaccination for youth sports amid a “record number” of virus outbreaks and an “alarming” surge that isn’t tied to any particular setting.
Mayor John Tory was asked if the City of Toronto has any plans to reintroduce capacity limits, while he didn’t speak about specific plans he says officials continue to monitor the numbers.
“As these kinds of things change and as we continue to adjust through large sporting events, through increased capacity that was brought in for restaurants, we’re constantly monitoring these numbers on a daily basis,” said Tory at city hall.
