Ontario reports slight drop in new COVID cases

Ontario is reporting 3,784 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday, as the province continues its battle against the Omicron variant of the virus.

The new infections are a slight drop from Sunday’s tally of 4,177 cases — the highest since April 23 when Ontario was two weeks into its last stay-at-home order mandate.

No new deaths have been reported.

Of the 3,784 new cases, 865 are in those who are not fully vaccinated while 138 are in those with an unknown vaccination status.

According to provincial data, 164 people are being treated for COVID in the ICU with 109 of those patients on ventilators.

More than 44,000 tests were conducted over the past 24 hours with a positivity rate of 9.7 per cent — the highest since late April.

This latest update comes as Ontario expanded its booster rollout to residents aged 18 and over on Monday. However, some were able to book their vaccine as early as Sunday night.

So far, 90.5 per cent of Ontarians aged 12 and over have received one dose of a COVID vaccine, while 87.8 per cent are fully vaccinated.

In an effort to combat the variant, the province reintroduced capacity limits in many indoor settings effective Sunday, including restaurants, retailers, personal care services and gyms. Social gatherings have been limited to 10 people indoors and 25 people outdoors.
