Woman wanted after hitting Hamilton police NYE RIDE check now in custody

Hamilton police say a 19-year-old woman accused of hitting two police officers with her vehicle during a RIDE check on New Year’s Eve is now in custody.

Hannah Pietrantuono, from Hamilton, turned herself in to police in Brantford on Thursday afternoon, according to police.

Pietrantuono is facing 10 charges including Criminal Negligence Cause Bodily Harm, Failure to Stop after Accident Causing Bodily Harm, Fail to Comply with Probation, and Resist Arrest.

Police said the officers were speaking to two drivers in the southbound lanes of Claremont Access just before 11 p.m. on Dec. 31, 2021, when a 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe drove through the RIDE lanes, striking two officers and knocking them unconscious.

The officers were taken to hospital with serious injuries and underwent a series of surgeries. They remain in hospital recovering from their injuries.

The vehicle was eventually recovered in the area of Inverness Avenue and Belair Drive but there was no sign of the driver.

Police said the Hyundai was involved in an earlier incident near Fennell Avenue and Hoover Crescent, where officers approached a driver who was unconscious at the wheel. When the officers went to make the arrest, police allege the vehicle was placed in drive and struck a cruiser before fleeing.

“Hamilton Police would like to thank the public for the phone calls, emails and social media messages showing support for our injured members,” they said in a statement on Thursday. “We would also like to thank the community for providing video surveillance, witness statements and tips.”
