Extreme Cold Warning ends for GTA but frigid temperatures linger

The City of Toronto and the surrounding Greater Toronto Area remain under an Extreme Cold Warning as temperatures plummet ahead of what is expected to be a dangerously cold day on Wednesday.

An Extreme Cold Warning issued by Environment Canada has been lifted for Toronto and the GTA but the frigid temperatures are expected to linger on Wednesday.

The warning was issued on Tuesday due to frigid windchills that were expected overnight, with minimum temperatures of -21 to -27 C but feeling more like -28 to -33 C with the wind.

CityNews 680 meteorologist Jill Taylor said the temperature will rise to a still frigid -10 C in the daytime on Wednesday but a bitterly cold windchill of near -22 will return overnight.

The extreme cold weather also led to a shutdown of the Scarborough RT on Wednesday morning. The TTC said there will be no service between Kennedy and McCowan stations due to weather-related signal issues. Shuttle buses are running.

CityNews meteorologist Natasha Ramsahai said the start of Wednesday would be freezing with “dangerous windchill values” and a high risk of frostbite — especially in the morning hours.

“Extreme cold puts everyone at risk,” Environment Canada said on Tuesday. “Risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter.”

There is a chance of light flurries late on Thursday, with an abundance of sunshine slated by the end of the week into Saturday. Though subject to change, Saturday is looking like a bitterly cold day.

“Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill,” Canada’s weather agency said. “If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside.”
