3 people injured, including baby, in Etobicoke apartment fire

Three people, including a baby, are in hospital after a two-alarm fire at an apartment building in Etobicoke.

Firefighters were called to the building on Eighth St. near Lake Shore Boulevard West just after 7 a.m. on Wednesday.

Fire officials said flames and heavy smoke were billowing from one of the windows.

A baby suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure. The infant’s mother had passed her child through a window to a friend. There was no fire in her unit when she broke her window open, but there was smoke in the hallway. The mother is being treated in hospital for cuts to her hand.

Paramedics also said a man in his 40s was treated for minor smoke inhalation. They also assessed five other people at the scene.

No one was in the unit where the fire broke out and it was contained to that apartment. However, smoke spread throughout the building. The fire has since been knocked down.

TTC buses were brought in to shelter residents.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
