Peel Regional Police are investigating after a 14-year-old girl was shot and killed in a Mississauga residential building.

Investigators were first called to an apartment around 9 p.m. on Tuesday in the area of Darcel Avenue and Etude Drive for reports of a shooting.

They located a 14-year-old girl suffering from gunshot wounds. She died at the scene.

Const. Heather Cannon says the victim lived at the building and was discovered in the stairwell.

“At this time, we are investigating. As of right now, this is part of the unclear part of the investigation,” Cannon said. “The residence we attended, she does live in that building with her family.”

The Homicide and Missing Person Bureau have now taken over the investigation. Const. Cannon says it’s currently being investigated as a homicide.

There is no information on suspects at this time. Police are urging members of the public to come forward.

Mississauga-Malton MP Iqwinder S. Gaheer called news of the shooting “tragic.”

“Sending my condolences to the family and friends that lost their loved one. Anyone with information is asked and encouraged to report to CrimeStoppers.”

A gofundme page has identified the teen as Taffash Riley.

“The Riley Family came from Jamaica in 2012 and do not have family here in Canada. It is just Mom, Dad and son,” reads the posting created by a neighbour of the family. “Their wish is to bring their daughter home.”

“The pain this family is going through is unimaginable. I hope, as a community, we can come together and show our support and help send Taffash home.”
