No proof of vaccination required at Leafs, Raptors games as of March 1

Fans attending Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Raptors games won’t have to show proof of vaccination as of March 1.

Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment says it will follow provincial guidelines announced earlier in the week and discontinue the proof of vaccination requirement.

However, proof of vaccination will remain in place if league rules require it for fans and personnel in close proximity to playing surfaces.

The policy will also impact fans attending Toronto Argonauts and Toronto FC games at BMO Field and Toronto Marlies games at Coca-Cola Coliseum.

“Confidence in the existing vaccination rates within the province, and the current epidemiology of COVID-19 as determined by public health officials, contributed to the decision,” MLSE said in a statement Friday.

MLSE says mask mandates will continue to be “strictly enforced,” adding proof of vaccine could be re-implemented should public health circumstances dictate.

MLSE says vaccine mandates will remain in place for full and part-time employees of the company until further notice.

Originally, capacity limits at indoor venues, including sporting arenas, were set to increase to 50 per cent on Feb. 21 but that was pushed forward to Feb. 17. All capacity limits are expected to be lifted on March 1, as long as public health and health system indicators continue to improve.
