Waterloo Region police say a man is facing assault and drunk driving charges following an alleged abduction that sparked an Amber Alert on Friday morning.

The missing 1-year-old girl has since been safely located.

Police were initially called to a home in Kitchener for reports of a “physical altercation” between a man and a woman.

Investigators say someone saw the Amber Alert and then saw the described vehicle in a parking lot in Kitchener and called police.

Officers responded to the call, located the missing child safely and at around 6:40 a.m. arrested a man in a “high-risk takedown.”

A man from Stratford was charged with one count of assault, two of assault causing bodily harm, one of taking a vehicle without consent and one of impaired driving.

“Issuing an Amber Alert and receiving information early is critical in these cases and we would like to thank the community and media for their assistance,” says Waterloo Regional Police spokesperson Cherri Greeno.

“We understand from messages received that some are upset by being woken up, but this proves the importance of these alerts.”
