Ontario is reporting 10 additional deaths due to COVID-19 on Sunday as the number of hospitalizations slips to its lowest level in almost two months.
Provincial officials reported 842 patients are hospitalized with COVID-19, marking the first time since Dec. 30 the figure has been below 1,000. However, health officials acknowledge not all hospitals report their data on the weekend.
Of those patients in hospital, 281 are in critical care continuing a slight decline over the past four days.
The 10 additional deaths – with nine occurring over the last month and an additional death added following a data cleanup – brings the provincial total to 12,430.
The province reported just over 2,000 new cases of COVID-19, however that number is underreported due to changes to the province’s testing policy.
A total of 15,434 tests were performed in the last 24 hour period for a positivity rate of 9.1 per cent, down slightly from the previous day.
Wastewater data being monitored by Ontario’s science advisory table suggests that COVID-19 activity in the province is starting to rise again, after consistently declining since early January.
Ontario administered 27,897 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine on Saturday including 7,658 second doses and 17,712 booster shots. Health officials say almost 93 per cent of Ontarians have received at least one dose of the vaccine while almost 91 per cent are considered fully vaccinated.
