Ryerson pauses COVID-19 vaccination and mask mandates for spring/summer semester

Ryerson University has announced they will be pausing their COVID-19 vaccination and mask mandates ahead of the spring/summer semester.

The suspension of the policies will take effect on May 1.

A release from the post-secondary school said the decision was in line with public health authorities and direction from the provincial government. Ontario dropped their mask mandate for indoor settings on March 21.

Students and other community members heading to campus must still provide their vaccination status, but those who were not vaccinated will now be able to sign up for classes with in-person components.

While the mask mandate for indoor settings has been lifted, masks are still encouraged in crowded settings and the school will support anyone who chooses to still wear a mask.

Plans for the fall semester are still underway and the university says they will continue to monitor COVID-19 in the city. If public health indicators change, they say the requirements for vaccinations and masks indoors could be reinstated.

Multiple other Ontario universities have made the decision to pause their COVID-19-related mandates as of May 1, including Wilfred Laurier University and University of Guelph.

The Council of Ontario Universities had announced back on March 11 that mandates would remain in effect through the winter semesters.
