Province offering financial relief for Brampton residents affected in February flooding

Brampton residents affected by flooding in the Churchville neighbourhood back in February will be able to apply for financial assistance from the province.

The provincial government has activated the Disaster Recovery Assistance for Ontarians (DRAO) program which provides relief to a primary residence and its basic contents, a small business, farm or not-for-profit organization.

The funds apply to emergency expenses incurred and the cost to repair or replace essential property not covered by insurance.

The deadline to submit an application is July 29, 2022.

Dozens of people were forced from their homes in the Churchville neighbourhood, near Hurontario and the 407, after spring-like temperatures and rain fell in the area on February 17, 2022.

Close to 100 homes suffered “significant damage” after melting ice led to the massive flooding of the Credit River. The water was rising so fast that at its peak, it was six feet deep in some areas, forcing fire crews to deploy rescue boats and go door-to-door to take residents to safety.

Officials later determined the cause of the flooding was from “ice damming” in an elbow of the river.
