A 17-year-old male student has serious injuries after he was shot in the parking lot of Victoria Park Collegiate Institute in North York.

Toronto police were initially called to the area near Don Mills Road and Lawrence Avenue East just after 11 a.m. Thursday.

The school is located on Wallingford Road, near Victoria Park Avenue and York Mills Road. However, police said the victim was found near Don Mills and Lawrence.

The male’s injuries are not life-threatening.

Ryan Bird, a spokesperson with the Toronto District School Board (TDSB), said the victim is a Grade 11 student.

Evidence markers can be seen in the parking lot behind some school buses and most of the area has been taped off.

Acting Duty-Insp. Kristy Smith said police found shell casings in the parking lot but didn’t elaborate on how many shots were fired.

Tony, who was doing installation work at a house located on the south side of the school, said he saw a black car with tinted windows speeding from the scene.

“We just heard what sounded like firecrackers, like about five shots, and then I’d seen a black car whipping around the school parking lot,” he said.

Police continue to search for a suspect or suspects.

“We don’t believe there are any concerns for the public at large right now. We believe this to be an isolated incident,” Smith said.

No other injuries were reported.
