2 men dead after early morning Brampton shooting

Peel police say two people are dead following an early morning shooting in Brampton at the Chandni Convention Centre on Gateway Boulevard.

Two people are dead following an early morning shooting in Brampton.

Peel Regional Police say they received a 911 call around 2 a.m. for reports of shots fired at the Chandni Convention Centre on Gateway Boulevard in the area of Queen Street East and Airport Road.

When police arrived they found two victims suffering from gunshot wounds.

Paramedics tell CityNews one man was pronounced dead at the scene while the other was taken to a trauma centre where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The homicide unit has taken over the investigation.

No suspect or vehicle descriptions are available at this time.

Police are appealing for witnesses who may have been attending an event around the time of the shooting to contact them with any information they may have.

The general manager of the banquet hall tells CityNews the shooting happened outside a Father’s Day Ball event that was going on inside at the same time.

Richard Marshall says surveillance cameras located around the building appear to show the suspects attempting to get into the event but being turned away by security ahead of the shooting. Marshall adds all footage is being turned over to police to assist in the investigation and he’s confident those responsible will be captured.

“We actually reached out to Peel police to get paid police for these events – we have a paid duty request that’s been denied for the sixth time,” said Marshall. “We’ve been trying to get the help that we need for the outside, not the inside. We put in the request but they get denied.”

Marshall adds no reason has been given for the denial of paid duty requests.

“That’s all we can do as business owners to try and protect our business.”

This is the second shooting incident at this location in the last six months.

In December 2021, a man and a woman were seriously injured in what police termed a targeted shooting.

Police say there is nothing to suggest at this time that this morning’s shooting is in any way connected to that incident.

“I’m very shocked because this is the second time on the outside of our facility,” said Marshall. “It gives us concern because we have a lot of weddings, we have a lot of kids in here, a lot of parents. Stuff like this, it gives us a bad reputation.”
