A special air quality statement has been issued for Toronto on Saturday as a heat warning remains in place.
Environment Canada says the hot and humid weather conditions are causing elevated pollution levels and there’s a possibility of deteriorating air quality.
“Hot and sunny conditions are expected to cause increasing ground-level ozone concentrations in the area,” the agency said in a statement, “Moderate risk AQHI values are expected throughout today with the potential of short-term high risk AQHI values in the afternoon.”
It warns people could experience a range of symptoms, including throat irritation, coughing, shortness of breath and headaches. The agency also said seniors, children and those with cardiovascular or lung disease are especially at risk.

“If you are experiencing symptoms, such as coughing or throat irritation, consider reducing or rescheduling strenuous outdoor activities until the special air quality statement is lifted,” Environment Canada said, “Exposure to air pollution is particularly a health concern for people with heart or breathing problems, those with diabetes, children and the elderly.”
Meanwhile temperatures are expected to hit the low 30s Saturday and Sunday it said, while humidex values are set to reach the mid to high 30s.
The agency says those most at risk in this extreme heat includes pregnant women, young children, older adults, anyone with chronic illnesses, and those working or exercising outside.
It’s advising those in Toronto and the GTA to stay hydrated and in a cool place, to check on loved ones, and to never leave pets or people inside of a parked vehicle.
A bit of a break is in the forecast for Torontonians, a cold front is expected to move in on Sunday and to lower temperatures by the evening.
