Peel Public Health has reported its first case of monkeypox in a Mississauga man in his 30s.
Acting Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kate Bingham for Peel Region says the risk to the public remains low at this time.
The confirmation of the first case of Monkeypox in the region comes several weeks after Ontario reported the first infection.
According to the monkeypox data provided by Public Health Ontario, as of June 23, there have been 45 confirmed monkeypox cases along with 12 probable and 30 suspected cases since the virus was first confirmed in the province in mid-May.
Most of the cases confirmed are in Toronto and all are male. The suspected/probable cases include seven females and 35 males.
Symptoms for Monkeypox can include fever, headache, fatigue and a r rash or lesions which may appear on the face or genitals and spread to other regions.
Anyone who has symptoms is asked to contact their health care provider and avoid close contact with others until their symptoms have improved and the rash has healed. Most people recover without treatment.
Toronto is currently offering monkeypox vaccination clinics to people who identify as a man (cisgender and transgender) and those who are gay, bisexual or a part of the men who have sex with men communities.
Peel has yet to announce any vaccine clinics at this time but are working to increase access for high-risk individuals.
