A Toronto teacher and early childhood educator have both been placed on home assignment following allegations two students were taped to their chairs.
The Toronto District School Board says they are investigating the claims which allegedly took place back in May in a kindergarten class at Seventh Street Junior School in south Etobicoke.
“When the school first learned of these allegations, it notified TDSB’s Employee Services department, Children’s Aid Society and the Toronto Police Service as per our procedures,” spokesperson Ryan Bird tells CityNews. “These allegations are very serious and, if true, would be completely unacceptable and could result in serious consequences up to and including dismissal.”
The TDSB did not provide any further details about the students involved.
The TDSB added no injuries were reported and that support is being provided for students in the impacted class.
The Children’s Aid Society tells CityNews it cannot speak directly to this matter due to privacy and confidentiality concerns but added “all child welfare agencies in Ontario are legislated to manage referrals where a child or youth has been harmed or is at risk of harm by a person acting as a caregiver. This includes teachers, day care staff, camp counsellors and so on.”
Toronto police tell CityNews they are not investigating this as a criminal matter.
