York regional police say a book of condolences for Const. Travis Gillespie, who died in a car accident on Wednesday, can be signed by members of the public at its headquarters.

Const. Gillespie, 38,  was on his way to work when he was killed in a two-vehicle crash on Major Mackenzie Drive, west of Warden Avenue, at around 6 a.m.

Investigators say the head-on crash involved a white Honda Accord, driven by Gillespie, and a black Porsche Cayenne.

Officers say Gillespie died at the scene. The driver of the Porsche, a 23-year-old Markham man, was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.

The book of condolences is at five police districts. They include Newmarket (429 Harry Walker Parkway South), Richmond Hill (171 Major Mackenzie Drive West), Sutton (3527 Baseline Road), Vaughan (2700 Rutherford Road), Markham (8700 McCowan Road), and police headquarters in Aurora (47 Don Hillock Drive).

Const. Gillespie was sworn in as a police constable on April 29, 2020. Before joining the force, he worked as a Metrolinx and GO Transit special constable.

The force said it would work with the police association to support Gillespie’s family over the coming days, weeks and months.

The officer’s death comes after Const. Andrew Hong was shot and killed in Mississauga on Monday. A book of condolences is available for the public to sign before a funeral planned for Wednesday, September 21.
