A man has been charged with first-degree murder after stabbing and killing a woman inside a store in Mississauga.

Peel regional police were called to a parking lot for reports of an altercation in the Mavis Road and Britannia Road area around 6 p.m. on Monday.

A woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are not releasing her identity until her next of kin has been notified.

Charanjeet Singh, 26, from Mississauga, was arrested at the scene and taken into custody. He has since been charged with first-degree murder and appeared in court on Tuesday.

Investigators said the violent incident happened inside a Canadian Tire. A witness told CityNews they heard screaming from inside the store and saw shoppers running.

“There was just a pool of blood,” the witness, who asked not to be identified, told CityNews. “The employee witnessed it [and] was terrified.”

The witness said shoppers believed the suspect was carrying a gun but then saw that it was a knife.

The suspect was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The homicide unit has taken over the investigation.
